Djokjakarta, 100 Years Ago
Travel Back in Time
Do you remember stories about Jogjakarta from your family? Do you have old pictures of the city? Now it’s time to travel back in time and discover its past. We’re excited to show you what Jogja looked like 100 years ago and share the stories connected to the streets we’ll walk on.
Are you ready to meet the past? You’ll walk along old streets where you can see historic buildings—some still beautiful and proud, others worn and hidden. For longer distances, we’ll ride in a becak, making the experience even more special.
What is the Plan?
✔ We start in the center of Jogja and stroll through the old streets, searching for traces of the past. The city is busy and lively, but it still shares stories from long ago.
✔ As we walk, we’ll share stories about the buildings and places around us. Today, Jogja is unique in Indonesia as the only city still ruled by a sultan and is an important center for art, education, and culture. Can you imagine what Jogja looked like 100 years ago?
✔ On this tour, we’ll focus on Jogjakarta around 1920 when the Dutch were in power. We’ll explore old buildings that were important at that time. Where was the center of power? What about the churches, schools, and hospitals? We’ll also visit places where the upper class would gather.
✔ You’ll have the chance to try snacks and drinks that were favorites of our ancestors. You might be surprised to learn that many of these snacks are still made the same way today!
✔ Worried about getting too tired? Don’t be! We’ll not only walk but also travel by becak, making it easy to see everything without getting too hot or worn out.
