Street food tour

A Culinary Exploration

private tour street food

Explore the vibrant food culture and traditions of Jogja on this popular tour.

Beginning in the late afternoon or early evening, you’ll savor some of the city’s finest dishes at its favorite eateries. Over the course of about 3.5 hours, you’ll sample a variety of foods from different locations. (Food and drinks are included!)

Authentic tastes

No visit to Yogyakarta is complete without trying its unique culinary delights. The city offers a variety of snacks that provide genuine tastes you won’t find anywhere else. From the sweetness of market treats to the savory tastes of street food, each bite connects you to the rich heritage of the local community.

You don’t need to dine at pricey restaurants for a true culinary adventure; a street food tour reveals the essence of authentic flavors.

Accompanied by your guide, you’ll explore the best street food Yogyakarta has to offer, either on the back of a motorbike or by car, discovering hidden gems that you might miss on your own.

Ancestral Traditions

At the market, you’ll feel the vibrant atmosphere. Wander through the food stalls, engage with friendly vendors, and savor recipes that have been passed down through generations. These unique snacks can’t be found in supermarkets, restaurants, or shopping centers. Most are crafted by older people, who are known for their meticulous preparation. Additionally, these skilled women often hold tightly to the cherished recipes passed down from their grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

tour in the evening streetfoodCultural Diversity and Traditions

It’s clear that street food is a beloved choice among locals. Each dish reflects the diverse cultures and philosophies behind traditional Indonesian cuisine.

For instance, tasting the sweetness of Madura satay compared to the flavors of Padang satay showcases the rich cultural tapestry of Indonesia.

Experience Indonesia through the eyes of the locals. Enjoying a meal while seated cross-legged at a food cart not only offers a unique culinary experience but also allows you to connect with the local community and take a moment to relax amid the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Evening Stroll

At the end of our tour, we’ll visit a beloved spot that has been popular since 1980. This square in the heart of Jogjakarta is a gathering place for locals to relax and enjoy themselves.

Renowned for its delicious tea and snacks, we’ll also partake in a traditional game. In Indonesia, abbreviations are common, so when locals invite you to play “Masangin,” they’re referring to “Masuk Dua Beringin,” or “Walking Between the Banyan Trees.”

The rules are simple: anyone who can walk between the two Banyan trees with their eyes closed will see their wishes come true. It sounds easy, but many find it challenging! The myths surrounding these twin Banyan trees add an enchanting layer to this central Yogyakarta location, blending ancient stories with the city’s modern vibrancy.

Along the side of the road
Together with your guide, you will go -on the back of the motorbike- to the warungs (food stalls), which are the most popular with the local population. The guide will lead you to warungs, which you would never have found on your own. Along the busy traffic and between the hustle and bustle of the many family businesses, you will walk past the food stalls that are named after mother or grandmother and enjoy recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Many older people who want to earn some extra money prepare and sell dishes, as they learned from their own parents and ancestors. They follow age-old recipes, meticulously and carefully, and in this way keep the traditions alive. Street food is a favourite with the local population. You can eat the most delicious traditional meals relatively cheaply. The many cultures that Indonesia has to offer can be found along the side of the road. The dishes lead us to the different regions of Indonesia. The sweetness of Madura satay is very different in taste than Padang satay. The sellers often have ancestors from faraway regions. This way you can easily get to know the cuisine of the entire archipelago.

Hello Kitty
There are a few more stops and when we are already quite full we arrive at the last stop. We never expected this. In the middle of the city near the kraton (royal palace) there is a large field (alun alun) around which all kinds of illuminated cars drive, people sit on rugs drinking tea and children shoot parachutes into the air with an elastic band and then see who can catch it. There are mainly locals again, almost no tourists. We go to one of the many eateries and get a tasty snack for dessert. We don’t want to sit down yet and first go for a walk. We get more explanation about everything we see. Some things we recognize, other snacks are completely new. Unfortunately we are completely full, otherwise we would have tried more.”

Reviews

Where locals eat

“Tonight my boyfriend and I did the private local street food tour in Yogyakarta with Indonesia Tour. It was very easy to book and our guides Tika and Natasha were so nice and friendly. We had a lot of fun together! Natasha and Tika told us about the food, showed us some nice local food markets (where locals go) and we tried different dishes. It was really fun to try! Natasha and Tike drove us on their scooters and we felt really safe. This was also a nice way to see more of the city center!
We definitely recommend this tour. Terima Kasih Natasha and Tika!”
